Hi friends, do you ever feel overwhelmed by “all the things”? Some days the responsibilities can weigh on us. If you are like me, the housework sometimes gets put on the back burner. Sometimes that’s the best place for it, but other times I just lose my care and feel indifferent towards it all.
To be honest, I have had a love-hate relationship with housekeeping, routines, self-discipline, and probably some other things I can’t think of right now. You too? If you are like me and you struggle with housekeeping, but have a heart for homemaking, then you are in the right place!
Friends, some people seem to be built for routine and consistency, while others (like me) struggle. It can seem like such a small thing, but all too often our homes overwhelm us, affect our feelings of self-worth, and affect our relationships: with God, with our loved ones, ourselves, and others (like the people we don’t invite inside because the house is a mess)! In reality, homemaking is important on many levels.
“A wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her own hands.” (Proverbs 14:1) Ever bounced a check because you didn’t make time to balance the checkbook? “She watches over the ways of her home and does not eat the bread of idleness.” (Proverbs 31:27) Has your work to rest ratio become unproportionate? Could you make life easier by incorporating a few simple routines consistently? “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward. It is the Lord Christ that you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24) Do you long to embrace a new attitude about housekeeping, to make a shift from drudgery to joyful servanthood? I do!
As I thought about today’s post my heart landed on a simple prayer- because some of us, with a heart for homemaking, really do strive to do better. If your heart is longing for a peaceful, well-kept, and orderly home, but you sometimes struggle with “all the things” then pray with me!
God, I confess to you the times that I haven't been a happy and eager homemaker. Please forgive me for viewing my many blessings as a burden at times. Forgive the times that I allow my responsibilities to slip through the cracks. Forgive the times I feel overwhelmed by, and indifferent toward, my home and its care.
I pray that you will provide me with a better mindset and a new heart for my home and those who dwell within it. Give me a clear vision for what could be. Show me the steps I can currently take to bring that vision to fruition.
Help me to accept and embrace my role as homemaker, hostess, servant, and ____________. Give me a clear understanding of what is mine to do, what I can appropriately say no to, and what can be delegated. Enable me to implement changes step-by-step, bit-by-bit, to become the steward of my home that you created me to be.
I cannot do it all on my own Lord. I hand the burden of my responsibilities off to you knowing that by your grace I can do all things. Work in me and through me Lord, to bless my home, those who dwell within it, and those that visit. Amen Let it be so!
