Hi friends, we all experience seasons of waiting. Sometimes there is an end in sight, and other times there are no clear answers at all. In my last post, we discussed how God uses seasons of waiting and difficulty to sanctify us, build our character, and strengthen our faith. We also looked at biblical reassurances that He truly has our best interest at heart. (You can read that post here.)

Today, we’re going to take a closer look at why we must wait, where we find encouragement while we do, and how to wait well.

When I was a single mother for nine years, I experienced many emotional seasons while waiting to meet my future husband—and a new father for my boys. There were times I was perfectly content in my waiting, times when I tried to make things happen on my own, and times when I faithfully trusted God to guide our future.

Looking back, I can clearly see that when I finally surrendered our future to God, that’s when things began to fall into place. I’m not saying that is always the case, but I am saying that the seasons I look back on with the most peace are the ones marked by patience and trust. The seasons I regret? Those were the times I tried to force outcomes outside of God’s will.

We cannot control our circumstances—but we can control how we wait. But first…

Why Must I Wait?

It’s often said that God’s timing is better than our own—and it’s true. He sees perspectives that are completely unavailable to us. In my experience, the greater our understanding of His timing, and the deeper our spiritual maturity, the easier it becomes to accept His plans for our lives.

Consider all the variables God is aligning: hearts opening, mindsets changing, character being developed, faith growing, maturity taking root, and circumstances coming together according to His will. When we pause to reflect on all of this, we begin to see what a miracle His perfect timing truly is. And while our longings may not disappear, the waiting can become easier to bear when we trust the One who holds it all together.

Encouragement While We Wait

Trust in God’s Plan

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9) God’s plan is far greater than our own. He reminds us: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

We can rest while we wait, trusting that God is working on our behalf—even when we cannot see it.

Trust in God’s Ability

Friends, we can trust that God is able to bring the longings of our hearts to fruition. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) The same God who parted the Red Sea and rained down manna is fully capable of orchestrating the timing of our hopes and dreams. “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” (Jeremiah 32:17)

Trust That God Is with You

We are not meant to walk through this life alone. Whether you are surrounded by loved ones or experiencing a season of deep loneliness, God is present. “The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) There is a void we sometimes feel—even when surrounded by people—that only God can fill. Marriage, parenting, and accomplishments cannot reach that place. Only a God who fully knows us and loves us completely can. And more than that—He longs to.

Trust That He Will Renew Your Strength

Waiting can be exhausting. Hoping for things unseen can wear us down. But God promises renewal: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) If your hopes align with God’s Word and His will, He will sustain you. “I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Five Things to Do While We Wait

1. Pray and Invite God Into the Situation

Prayer invites God to work in our circumstances—both in our own lives and in the lives of others. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7) God is waiting for your invitation. You don’t need perfect words—just a willing heart.

2. Hope Expectantly

While you wait, hope with confidence. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1) Trust that if something is right for you, God will bring it to pass. And if it isn’t, He will lovingly withhold it.

3. Focus on Personal Growth and Maturity

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.” (James 1:5) Use this season to grow. God may be preparing you for blessings you can’t yet imagine—maturing areas of your heart that weren’t even on your radar.

4. Do Your Part

You may have heard the saying, “God feeds the birds, but He doesn’t put the food in their nests.” Is God prompting you to take a step of faith? To learn something new? To clean up distractions? Sometimes God waits for our obedience before He moves.

5. Serve Others

Waiting well is an art—and isolation is a temptation many of us face (myself included). While discouragement is understandable, serving others can be a powerful source of renewal. “Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… bearing fruit in every good work.” (Colossians 1:10) Even small acts—encouraging words, prayer, or meeting practical needs—can strengthen your faith while you wait.

As we grow in our understanding of God’s perfect timing, we grow in trust—and trust helps us wait well. We don’t need to wait for “someday” to turn to Christ, and we don’t have to have everything figured out before we can be a blessing to others.

So let me ask you:

  • What situation can you prayerfully invite God into today?

  • Where can you do your part while trusting Him to do His?

  • In what small way can you serve someone—perhaps even in your own family—right now?
